Community and Service Reflection 2012 – Quackfest Scanner/Register
How did I get involved with Quackfest Registration?
I got involved with Quackfest Registration through my Systems Technology class. Mr. Mckie our ST teacher informed us that it would be a good choice to participate in the Quackfest registration teams, the grade 10 students in ST would make up all the registers and scanners for Quackfest entrances. In Term 2 of ST, we the students were learning about event management systems and software, and as a result of this, the main product for our terms would be to help manage an event. Because Quackfest would have a lot of guests, the ST teachers devised the use of the eventbrite system to help manage the gates. The grade 10 students, including myself, would either sell entrance tickets to Quakcfest, or scan the tickets at the doors, ushers of sorts.
    What Community did I serve?
I helped serve the school’s Quackfest team; who in turn raising money for the creation of a school for underprivileged children in Sri Lanka’s Eravur district. I believe I served the school more than anything; I helped make Quackfest a successful charity fundraiser. I had in reality, served two different communities; one as an organizer addressing a system issue, the other as a helper in charity.
What need did my Group and I address?
My Group and I addressed the need to have an organized system to manage Quackfest. Our work benefitted the school in multiple ways. To begin with, we allowed the school to have a proper group of people to usher and manage the entrances to the Quackfest; a key part to ensuring the event’s success. Secondly, I had designed the method in which these volunteers would work on the day of the event in and around the areas of Quackfest; where they would manage the tickets, people, and selling the tickets, who would work where, and at what times.
    What was our action plan?
Our action plan was pretty simple, the group in coordination had devised it with Mr. Mckie and other teachers. Various people, like me, would organize different aspects of the volunteer project; for example I had managed the human resources aspect of the group, others would handle the ticketing system and logistics etc. Once these various systems were in place, the group as a whole would carry out these various systems, according to plans like the one I had created for the group. On the day we would serve different people entering the premises of the event; by either checking in pre-booked tickets, and also selling tickets to people who didn’t have them pre-booked. We would sit on tables near the gates and control who would enter the premises.
    What happened during our project?
The day of the event was pretty simple in terms of it’s narrative. We came at around 1 noon with our Ipads and had talked to Mr. Mckie about who would work where based on my designs. After being assigned a specific gate and groups, the various volunteers went off to their gates in their groups. Once there, the work began at around 2 PM, some students were assigned ticket selling, while others were assigned to check in pre-booked tickets. It was my job to check in people with pre-booked tickets at my group’s gate in front of the school’s foyer. This had continued with some business because of the rush of people until around 4 PM when not many new guests came anymore. After clearing our tables at 5 PM, we were dismissed to go home.
What was my MYP Learner Profile?
The MYP learner profile I showed the most was knowledgeable. I believe this because knowledge was the most important skill I had to use during the duration of the project. Knowledge of the previous Quackfest was especially helpful. I used my knowledge of the previous editions of Quackfest to create appropriate gates for the entrance. I used my knowledge of people in my grade to create groups that could work together, and also I used my knowledge of excel to create proper ways of organizing the groups.
What Area of Interaction did I relate to during the project?
The AOI that fit me the best during the Quackfest was Human Ingenuity. I believe this because my ingenuity was what helped me throughout the project. I applied my human ingenuity in both designing the organizing system and also in implementing it.
What about the future of Quackfest helpers?
I think the same program I designed using paint and excel should be used again in the future, as it is the best way to utilize the volunteers.

My plan stage had everything it needed to, and was handed in on time. This is because it perfectly explained every stage of the create stage, and had more than one option for me to use, incase things went wrong.
My create stage will help the world, because it provides schools that have budgets big enough to give computers to students to have contact with them when the students are sick. It gives all teachers a thourough idea and plan to do when their students are sick.
